Do you have any advice to give in starting a new gift boutique business?

My sister and I are considering starting up a new venture and eventually opening up our own business. We both, for years, have been crafty and creative and she has her own line of bath products and I have my line of gift Baskets and gifts in a jar. Do you have any advice or tips you might want to share? We are in the Central Valley in California and would have even thought about more or less Internet selling to begin with, but obviously we are pretty new to the retail selling part outside of bazaars and boutiques both locally as well as those we travel to. Any thoughts? Thank you much!

Do lots of homework into finding the right shop and the legalities of forming a partnership, etc. If you can do it, get a job in a boutique part time to see how things work and don't work. I made the mistake of starting a business without fully researching the market, and I lost a lot of money. Make sure that you have enough capital that you are willing to lose for a year. Sometimes a business takes time to get off the ground. But you have to be willing to lose that capital if the business does not get anywhere.

You might consider working from your garage and selling in a home shop via ebay, your own web site or Amazon.com. You would have a minimum overhead and could then build up a clientele.

I wish you lots of luck and enjoyment from your venture.

Home Gift Basket Business : Business Start up Guide

Want to know how to start a home gift basket business? Gift baskets have become a very popular item. It is a very profitable industry. They are both attractive and useful. There are some important decisions you will need to make to guarantee the success of your business. Your first decision is where you will base your business. You can work and sell from your home, sell over the internet or open a store.

1. If you decide to work and sell from your home, you will need a separate area for making your baskets. Choose an area that is easily accessible such as a heated garage or an enclosed porch.

2. For those who want to sell gift baskets on the internet, hire a professional photographer to take pictures of your product. This will make sure that potential customers can see clearly what it is they are buying.

3. Opening a store is a third option. You will need to have a variety of baskets on display as well as various individual items that make up your baskets. These will encourage walk in customers to make purchases. Promotions such as "How to Make a Gift Basket" classes are also possible in a store.

You will need to make decisions regarding the style of your gift baskets, too.

1. There is a wide selection of gift basket types that you may choose to sell. A few examples are a variety of teas, cheeses and wine, chocolates and candy, and gift baskets for children or new mothers.

2. Deciding on the quality of baskets you will use is important, too, as this will affect the prices of your product. Gift baskets that are not intended for other uses will cost less than baskets that will be used again and again.

3. Research and find reliable suppliers for the product you wish to carry. Depending on your need, buying local is usually the best choice. People often want to buy from local companies and your gift baskets can accommodate those feelings.

Now that you know how to start a gift basket business, take action today. Your home gift basket business can keep you busy year round. Careful planning and decision making will guarantee not only your satisfaction but your customers' satisfaction as well.
